Immunohistochemical Studies on the Gastroenteric Somatostatin Secreting Cells in Mice, Rats and Hamsters

Abstract
The gastroenteric somatostatin secreting cells of the laboratory animals(mice, rats and hamsters) were investigated immunohistochemically, and their distribution, and morphological characteristics were determined.
Morphological characteristics of somatostatin secreting cells in stomach mucosa of several animals were round, pisiform and flask shaped. Round-shape cells have not cytoplasmic processes. Apical or basal cytoplasmic processes of flask-shaped cells extrude long and slender from cell body. Apical processes established contact to lumen of gastrointestinal trace and duct of intestinal gland. Basal processes extended over one or more neighbouring cells and end in terminal expansions in many cases. Somatostatin secreting cells of rats and hamsters in stomach were predominantly detected in the basal third of oxyntic mucosa, and the middle and the basal third of pyloric mucosa. The cells in mice stomach were detected in the Nasal third of oxyntic and pyloric mucosa. Comparing oxyntic mucosa to pyloric mucosa in laboratory animals, somatostatin secreting cells could be more detected in pyloric mucosa than oxyntic mueosa in rats and mice. In hamsters, the cells were mire detected in oxyntic mucosa than pyloric mucosa.
Among the 3 animals, somatastatin secreting cells were predominantly detected in the pyloric region of mice. In small intestine, somatostatin secreting cells were a few, and were observed chiefly in surface epithelium of villi and glandular epithelium of intestinal gland in rats, mice and hamsters except the intestinal gland of ileum in rats and surface epithelium of duodenal villi in mice. In large intestine, somatostatine secreting cells were detected in surface epithelium and glandular epithelium of intestinal gland in rats. In mice, somatostatin secreting cells can he detected in surface epithelium and intestinal gland of cecum and intestinal gland of colon. In hamsters, the cells were detected in intestinal gland o cecum and rectum.
Frequency of gastroenteric somatostatin secreting cells in stomach were high in oxyntic and pyloric mucosa im mice and hamsters.
